Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka was founded in 1955 and has grown in the past six decades into one of the most significant educational and scientific institutions recognised in Croatia and abroad. Our Faculty was established by notable people who were ahead of their time. The establishment was initiated by Andrija Štampar. He brought together former teachers and students from Zagreb, Vienna, Pest and Prague, which brought a light of diversity, tolerance and free thought to our region. The Faculty is located in one of the oldest parts of Rijeka, in the impressive palace of the Branchetta brothers dated from the beginning of the twentieth century. The project of the young architect from Rijeka who won the competition was called Aria e luce. Today, this building surrounded by an attractive park is one of the most beautiful faculties of the University of Rijeka and undoubtedly beyond.
In synergy with our teaching bases and the University of Rijeka, we educate experts in the field of medicine and environmental and public health.
We collaborate closely with the Faculty of Health Studies and the Faculty of Dental Medicine, thus jointly educating future doctors of dental medicine and non-medical healthcare professionals. We are the oldest and largest constituent of the University of Rijeka. Our students, teachers and alumni are the greatest value of the Faculty. Students of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka have an active social life. They organise numerous student events (Humanijada, Bal medicinara, Kapi života…) and do not lag in scientific and professional work, which is evident through the organisation of numerous international scientific and professional conferences. The Student Union, FOSS, CroMSIC and EMSA give that special, much-needed breath of student life that is almost as valuable as the educational part that our teachers provide. Finally, our teachers… To be a part of the Faculty that is big enough to be significant yet small enough to remain independent is the advantage of studying and working at our Faculty. Our teachers recognise their students in the hallways, on the street and in the city, which is a result of a direct, personal and individualised approach to students. We are also proud of our alumni! Former students of our Faculty are healthcare providers at the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, most of southwestern Croatia, but also beyond. Many of them are recognised experts abroad who work in prestigious hospitals and research centres throughout Europe and the US. We are pleased to still have contact with them through the Faculty’s Alumni Association.

MISSION
The mission of the Faculty of Medicine as a public teaching and scientific institution is to educate students of medicine, sanitary engineering, medical laboratory diagnostics, pharmacy, as well as other cadres in the field of biomedicine and health and other interdisciplinary areas to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for the prevention of diseases, preservation and improvement of health, patient treatment and rehabilitation and sustainable development of the society. The basis for further development is the Faculty’s permanent commitment to investing in the quality of the education process, scientific, research and professional work in biomedicine and health and in interdisciplinary scientific fields. The close connection of its core activities will contribute to the integration of scientific and professional results and findings into the education process, resulting in the better, faster, comprehensive and sustainable development of the society in which we live. To achieve the objectives set, the Faculty will actively work on cooperation with the leading national and international healthcare, educational and scientific institutions to enable professional prosperity to its students, teachers and staff, thus contributing to the development of the Faculty, University and the society in which we live.
VISION
The vision of the Faculty of Medicine is to position itself nationally and internationally as a leading, recognizable and competitive higher education, scientific and professional institution that is closely connected with and adjusted to the needs of the local and broader community. In terms of education, the Faculty is continuously developing as a higher education institution recognizable primarily for the education of cadres with high moral values and skills and knowledge based on learning outcomes. In terms of science and research, the Faculty is continuously maintaining its position as a recognizable scientific centre for biomedical and interdisciplinary research, which is coordinated with the European concept of “smart specialization” and oriented toward applied and applicable science, especially in the field of translational research, with the aim of introducing modern scientific findings into everyday practice.
